What does “non mi va” mean in Italian?

Beyond “to go,” andare hides one of the most useful conversational phrases in Italian: mi va. Ti va un caffè? is “Do you fancy a coffee?”; non mi va di uscire is “I don’t feel like going out.” It works exactly like piacere: the verb stays in the third person (va / vanno) and you attach an indirect pronoun — mi, ti, gli, le, ci, vi — to say for whom it goes.

The literal logic is “it goes for me / it doesn’t go for me.” Add di + verb to spell out the activity: mi va di camminare (I feel like walking), non mi va di cucinare (I don’t feel like cooking). The same versatile andare also means “to fit” (questi pantaloni mi vanno stretti, these trousers are tight on me), “to function” (le cose vanno bene, things are going well) and “to cook” (fai andare il sugo, let the sauce simmer).
