What does the prefix “ge-” mean in Esperanto?

Describing her family, this creator mentions “mia avino havas naŭ gefratojn” — “my grandmother has nine siblings.” Esperanto has no separate word for “siblings”: frato means brother, and the prefix ge- marks a mixed-sex group, so gefratoj covers brothers and sisters together. The same prefix turns patro (father) into gepatroj (parents) and edzo (husband) into geedzoj (a married couple).

Traditionally, ge- marks a mixed-gender group mainly in the plural: gefratoj = fratoj kaj fratinoj, brothers and sisters together; gepatroj = parents the same way. Singular neutral uses like gefrato (one sibling, sex unspecified) do exist in some modern usage, but gefratoj — what this clip actually says — is the learner-safe, traditional standard. Either way, it’s one of the cleanest examples of Esperanto plugging a gap English also has: English “siblings” does the same job, but had to borrow a separate word; Esperanto just added a prefix.
