What is a “tamalada”?

A tamalada is the all-day Mexican family event of making tamales together. Aunts, mothers, and grandmothers form an assembly line: one soaks corn husks, another spreads masa, another fills, another wraps, another stacks the steamer. Tamales take hours to assemble and steam, and a proper tamalada often runs from morning into evening, especially around Christmas, Día de la Candelaria, and birthdays.
