Why do Japanese people drink コーヒー牛乳 after a bath?

コーヒー牛乳 (kōhī gyūnyū)
Japanese bathhouse-culture item
“Coffee milk” — the classic post-sentō (public bathhouse) treat, drunk in one go with a hand on the hip.

コーヒー牛乳 (coffee milk) is a sweetened, coffee-flavored milk drink sold from glass-bottle coolers at Japanese sentō (public bathhouses) since the 1930s. It became the default reward for finishing a hot bath — real coffee was expensive back then, so milk dealers pitched this cheaper alternative to bathhouses installing new refrigerators. It’s tied to a specific ritual: one hand on the hip, head tilted back, drunk in a single go.

In the clip, two people try to guess who’s drinking what purely from taste, eventually landing on コーヒー牛乳 for the “rich, slightly bitter” one versus りんごジュース (apple juice) for the “clean, refreshing” one. Sentō coolers traditionally also stock フルーツ牛乳 (fruit milk) — both part of the same nostalgia-driven “post-bath means milk” custom that many Japanese people over 40 still consider the “correct” way to end a bathhouse visit.
