Why are “tiny houses” popular in the Netherlands?

The Dutch tiny house movement is part lifestyle, part response to the country’s chronic housing shortage. The Netherlands has hundreds of registered tiny-house dwellings on dedicated municipal plots, where residents pay reduced erfpacht in exchange for living in homes typically under 50 square meters. Cities like Almere, Nijmegen, and Apeldoorn have run pilot tiny-house-villages, often paired with sustainable infrastructure (solar, composting toilets, shared kitchens). The movement attracts young families, single retirees, and digital nomads in roughly equal share.
