What is a Dutch “veiligheidsregio”?

A veiligheidsregio (“safety region”) is one of 25 administrative units the Netherlands set up after the 2010 Wet veiligheidsregio’s, each combining the fire department, ambulance services, and crisis-management coordination under a single governance structure. The reform followed lessons from the Vuurwerkramp (Enschede, 2000) and the Café Het Hemeltje fire (Volendam, 2001). The 25 regions map roughly to provincial groupings but are smaller, and each runs its own training academy, control room, and recruitment campaign.
