What are the “Koningsspelen” in the Netherlands?
The Koningsspelen (“King’s Games”) is the Dutch primary-school sports day held nationwide on the last Friday before Koningsdag. Created in 2013 to mark King Willem-Alexander’s investiture, the event now reaches over a million kids across some 7,000 schools, who all do the same warm-up, eat the same orange gezond ontbijt, and run the same field-day spelletjes. Sack races (zaklopen), rope-pulling, koekhappen: the traditional list. Local councils, mayors, and occasionally the royal couple drop in for press shots.
