What is “korfbal”, the Dutch national sport?

Korfbal is a Dutch-invented team sport played by mixed teams of four men and four women per side. Created in 1902 by Amsterdam schoolteacher Nico Broekhuysen as a deliberately co-ed alternative to basketball, the sport stays uniquely Dutch in popularity: roughly 90,000 active players in the Netherlands and a Korfbal League with weekly Eredivisie-style matches. The annual Korfbal League-finale is held at Rotterdam Ahoy and routinely draws 10,000+ fans. The rules require gender-balanced positions and forbid running with the ball, both unusual in modern team sport.
