What is “Volendamse klederdracht” and why are there photo studios?

Volendam is the former fishing village 20 km north of Amsterdam where every visiting tourist (and many Dutch families) ends up in front of a photo-studio backdrop wearing klederdracht: the traditional black-bodice-and-white-cap costume of the Zuiderzee fishing communities. The studios charge around €30, hand you the outfit, and shoot a kiekje (Dutch slang for snapshot, from the click-sound of an old shutter). The town leans into its identity around clogs, smoked eel, and accordion bands. The village of Marken across the bay does the same with a different costume.
