What is a Dutch “krekelboerderij”?

A krekelboerderij is a Dutch cricket farm, and yes, the Netherlands has them. Dutch food-tech companies like Protifarm and Protix run industrial-scale insect operations producing cricket and mealworm protein for animal feed and increasingly for human food (energy bars, pasta, baking flours). The country was an early mover when the EU approved cricket flour for sale in 2022, partly thanks to research at Wageningen University. Dutch cricket farming also sells live insects to pet shops and zoos.

In this clip, a Dutch presenter visits a krekelboerderij and asks about the lifecycle: “Het mooie van een krekel is, is dat het echt direct een krekel is. Het is niet zoals een kever of een vlinder dat het eerst een wormpje is en dan verpopt.”
