What does “tirer les ficelles” mean in French?
When someone “tire les ficelles,” they control a situation in secret. They stay hidden and make other people act — like a person pulling the strings of a puppet. You cannot see them, but they decide what happens. French speakers use this for a hidden boss, a secret organiser, or anyone who really controls a situation without showing it. You will hear it in news and drama.
In this soap-opera recap, Manu slowly understands he is being set up. The narrator says: “Quelqu’un tire les ficelles dans l’ombre” — “Someone is pulling the strings in the shadows.” A hidden person is controlling everything to destroy him. The image comes from puppets. A puppet master moves a puppet by pulling its strings (les ficelles). So “tirer les ficelles” means to control people the same way, without being seen. People have used this expression in French since at least the early 1800s. You can use it in everyday life: “Ce n’est pas le directeur qui décide, c’est sa femme qui tire les ficelles” — “The director doesn’t decide; his wife pulls the strings.” The person who really controls things is sometimes called “le marionnettiste” (the puppet master).
