What does “là” mean at the end of a French sentence?

French spoken-usage shift
textbook “there” — but in speech it often expands to “here,” “now,” or “this situation”

Textbooks teach as “there,” and it still can mean that. But in real speech it often expands to point at the current place, moment, or situation: je suis là is “I’m here,” and tu es sérieux, là ? is “are you serious right now?” Là, je peux pas is “I can’t at the moment” — no distance implied at all.

Tacked onto the end of a sentence, adds insistence or immediacy — arrête là, tu exagères là — without changing what the sentence says. That sentence-final turns up across informal French and is especially frequent in Quebec French, where it can punctuate almost any clause and often works as a filler rather than as emphasis.
