What does “aîné(e)” mean in French?
In everyday French, “aîné(e)” means the oldest child in a family, or someone older than you. But in many Indigenous communities in Canada — First Nations, Inuit, and Métis — an “aîné(e)” is something more: a respected Elder who carries the culture, the stories, and the teachings. It is a role, not just an age. A community gives this title to someone known for deep knowledge — age alone does not decide it.
The report introduces Dolores Gosselin as an “aîné Métis” who travels to schools in Manitoba “pour transmettre un savoir longtemps mis de côté” (to pass on knowledge that was ignored for a long time). Later the journalist says “Selon l’aîné, raconter ses histoires, c’est éviter qu’elles disparaissent” — “According to the Elder, telling her stories keeps them from disappearing.” The base meaning of “aîné(e)” is simple: it comes from Old French “ainz né,” meaning “born before” (from Latin ante natus). Your “frère aîné” is your older brother; “l’aîné de la famille” is the eldest child. Its opposite is “puîné(e)” — “born after.” In this clip the word carries a specific, respectful sense found in many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities in Canada. Here, the title is not given by age alone — a community gives it to someone seen as a keeper of wisdom and cultural memory. English usually translates it with a capital E: “Elder.” Note also “Métis” (capital M): in Canada this names one specific Indigenous people of mixed Indigenous and European roots, historically centred around the Red River in Manitoba — not simply anyone of mixed background.
