What does “c’est une claque” mean in French?
A “claque” is a slap with an open hand. So “c’est une claque” sounds harsh, but it is often a big compliment. It means something hit you so hard it left you speechless — in a good way. Here a tasting menu is called “une claque”: the food was amazing. The same word can also describe a shock or a painful defeat, so context always tells you which meaning is intended.
In the clip: “Son menu, c’est une claque.” → “Her menu is a slap” — meaning it is amazingly good, much better than the rest. “Une claque” first means a slap on the face (from the verb “claquer”, to make a sharp sound). In informal speech it became a way to say something amazed you completely. A film, a concert, a meal, or a piece of news can all be “une claque.” The feeling is always strong, never mild. Watch for the other side of the word. “Prendre une claque” can mean to suffer a real shock or a heavy loss — a team can “prendre une claque” (get beaten badly). And “en avoir sa claque” is different again: it means “I’ve had enough.” Examples: “Ce film, c’est une claque.” (That film blew me away.) “On a pris une claque ce soir.” (We got thrashed tonight.)
