Comment le premier métro de Londres a été construit

What does “embouteillage” mean in French?
In France, an embouteillage is a traffic jam: too many cars, so the road stops moving. The surprise is the inside of the word. It comes from bouteille, the French word for “bottle.” Think of a bottle’s narrow neck: liquid can only pass slowly. Cars in a jam do the same thing. This is a very common word you hear on the radio, in the news, and in everyday talk.
In the clip, the city wants a metro to fix its streets: “Ils avaient désespérément cherché comment réduire les fameux embouteillages des routes” — “They had desperately looked for a way to reduce the famous traffic jams on the roads.” Later it says the metro helps “combattre les embouteillages” — “fight the traffic jams.” The word is built from bouteille (bottle) plus the verb embouteiller, “to put into bottles.” First it meant filling wine bottles. Then people used it for the image of a narrow bottleneck (un goulot) that blocks the flow — so it came to mean blocked traffic. A more casual word for the same thing is un bouchon, which also means a “cork” or “stopper.” So both common French words for a traffic jam come from the world of bottles. Example: “Il y a un gros embouteillage sur l’autoroute” — “There is a big traffic jam on the highway.”
