What does “rien à foutre” mean in French?
In this argument someone says “rien à foutre” twice — a strong way to say “I do not care.” It comes from the vulgar verb foutre, so it is rude and harsh. Keep it for close friends, or for showing real anger among people you trust — never at work, with strangers, or in any polite setting. The full form is “j’en ai rien à foutre.” For the same idea in safe French, say “je m’en fiche” or “ça m’est égal.”
Transcript: « Et là, rien à foutre. Mais alors, rien à foutre. » — “And at that point, I couldn’t care less. I mean, really, not one bit.” The verb foutre is a rough informal verb that once overlapped with faire (“to do”) or mettre (“to put”), but today it is clearly slang and often rude. The reflexive form “s’en foutre” means “to not care about something”: “je m’en fous” = “I don’t care.” The phrase “rien à foutre” is even more blunt and is common in arguments. You will also hear the full form “j’en ai rien à foutre,” and the extremely crude “j’en ai rien à branler” (avoid this one — it is very offensive). Safe everyday alternatives that are fine with anyone: “je m’en fiche,” “je m’en moque,” or “ça m’est égal” (the last one is the most neutral and polite). Keep “rien à foutre” for very close friends or to show real anger — never at work, with strangers, in polite settings, or in writing.
