What does “à la une” mean in French?

“À la une” means on the front page — the lead story, the big news of the day. “La une” is journalist shorthand for a newspaper’s first page (page one, “la première page”), so anything “à la une” is what editors chose to put up front. It’s the exact phrase French radio and news shows use to introduce the day’s top headlines, which makes it the first thing to recognise when you follow French news.

Usage: “Cette affaire fait la une de tous les journaux” (this story is on every front page). A small but telling rule: “la une” never contracts to “l’une,” because “l’une” would collide with “lune” (the moon) and lose its meaning. So it stays stubbornly “à la une.” Knowing it unlocks the whole news-intro ritual — “À la une cette semaine…” is the French equivalent of “Today’s top stories.”
