What do “fil,” “briza,” and “mahrousa” mean in Levantine Arabic?

In Levantine Arabic, a piggy bank is called المحروسة (al-mahrousa), literally “the protected one.” It’s the same affectionate epithet historically used for cities like Cairo and Damascus, where treasured things were said to be “guarded by God.” Calling a savings jar al-mahrousa turns spare change into something worth defending.

The clip is about a savings challenge, where small coins (فل وبريزة, fil w-briza, two old Ottoman-era coin nicknames) get fed into the mahrousa. These are exactly the words that distinguish dialectal Arabic from MSA: colourful and affectionate in spoken Levantine, completely absent from formal Arabic teaching materials.
