What is “Štedrý večer” in Slovakia?

This sketch turns on the great festive question, whose family hosts: «vidíme sa u nás na Štedrý večer» (“see you at ours on Christmas Eve”). In Slovakia, Štedrý večer, literally “the Generous Evening,” is the heart of Christmas, not the 25th.

December 24th is when it all happens: the big meal (often kapustnica soup and fried carp), gifts under the tree, and the family gathered. Štedrý comes from štedrý (“generous, bountiful”), and Štedrý deň is the whole “Generous Day.” The clip’s drama, u nás or u našich (our place or my parents'), is every couple’s December standoff.
