What does “тарелочница” mean in Russian?

Тарелочница is insulting Russian dating slang for a woman accused of going on dates mainly for a free meal. The joke is built on тарелка, “plate”: supposedly she wants what is on the plate more than the person across the table. A male version, тарелочник, is sometimes used too, though it is much less established, and the word already has an older meaning: a musician who plays cymbals.

The clip turns the insult back on the man. When he calls her a тарелочница for refusing to go home with him, she agrees to split the bill, but only by what each person actually ate. His food costs far more, so she fires back: ты не просто тарелочник, ты профессионал, “you’re not just a тарелочник, you’re a professional.” Here тарелочник is a playful reversal of the newer dating insult.
