What does “дедуля” mean in Russian?
Russian has a system of affectionate suffixes that soften any noun into a term of endearment. Дед means “old man” or “grandfather” — already familiar — but add -уля and you get дедуля: “grandpa” in its warmest, most affectionate register. The suffix carries the tone of speaking to a child, or about someone you genuinely adore. It’s the same move that turns мама into мамуля and сын into сынуля.
In the clip, the narrator calls the Harold meme man дедуля as he completes a charity 5K in Budapest at age 80 — the word perfectly captures fond, indulgent admiration rather than plain description.
