What does “superficial wound” mean in English?
When a vet checks an injured deer and says “the wounding was only superficial,” she means the injury did not go deep — just some scraping and hair loss on the skin. Many learners know “superficial” to mean caring only about how things look on the outside. But in medical English it has a clear, useful meaning: “on the surface, not serious.” Doctors and vets use it in exactly this way.
In the clip, after the deer is freed from the metal fence, the vet Judith checks it carefully and reports: “There’s no fractures … the wounding was only superficial.” This is good news — no broken bones, no deep injury. You can use this word the same way: “He fell but the cuts were superficial.” “The damage to the car looks bad but it is only superficial.” The opposite is a “deep” wound or one that reaches muscle or bone. Note: the same word is also used to describe a person who only cares about how things look on the outside — but that is a different, non-medical use. In a medical context, “superficial” always means “limited to the surface.”
