What does “dig deeper” mean in English?
When you “dig deeper” you don’t stop at the first answer. You keep asking questions and looking for details that are hard to find. Journalists use this phrase a lot — a story that looks simple on the outside often hides important facts. The image comes from digging in the ground: the further you dig, the more you find. It works for any kind of searching.
In the clip, the presenter explains what drives journalists: “the thing that fuels many journalists is a sense of curiosity. That’s what drives them to dig deeper and uncover critical details for meaningful news.” Curiosity is the feeling, digging deeper is the action, uncovering is the result. You can use “dig deeper” in many situations. A teacher might say: “Your essay is too short — you need to dig deeper into the research.” A manager might say: “The report looks good, but let’s dig deeper into the numbers.” The verb “dig” also shows up in two related phrases: “dig into” something (look closely at a specific topic) and “dig up” information (find something that was hidden). All three share the same idea — going below the surface to find what is really there.
