What is a “corn dog” in American food?
A corn dog is a hot dog on a stick, dipped in cornmeal batter and deep-fried until golden. It’s almost exclusively American: state fairs, school cafeterias, gas-station grills, and supermarket freezer aisles all carry them. The corn dog showed up at American fairs in the 1940s; the Texas State Fair in Dallas claims its own version, Fletcher’s Corny Dog, since 1942. American kids grow up with frozen corn dogs heated in the microwave, and the regional twist is to dust the batter with hot Cheeto crumbs or stuff cheese inside.
In this clip, a babysitter heats up frozen corn dogs for the kids' lunch: “yes, I do get my corn dogs frozen. Sorry to disappoint.”
