What does “agujetas” mean in Mexican Spanish?
In Mexico, agujetas are shoelaces — the cords you tie your shoes with. The catch for learners: in Spain and much of Latin America, agujetas means the day-after muscle soreness you feel from exercise (the “pins and needles” ache, from aguja, “needle”). Same word, two unrelated everyday meanings split by region. In Mexico you might also hear cintas for laces, but agujetas is the default.
Both senses trace back to aguja (“needle”): the lace is the descendant of a tipped cord used to fasten clothing, while the soreness evokes being pricked by a hundred needles. The clip is a Chespirito cobbling routine where don Ramón teaches shoe repair — agujetas, lengüeta (the tongue of the shoe), and bolear (to shine shoes) all show up as authentic Mexican shoe vocabulary.
