Ratero builds directly on rata, “rat,” plus the suffix -ero for “one who does something” — a thief who operates the way a rat does: small, quiet, never taking enough to be caught. It’s not the word for an armed robber or a con artist running a big scheme; it’s specifically the low-level, sneaky kind of stealing.
