What does “ñaño” mean in Ecuadorian Spanish?

In Ecuador, a brother or sister isn’t only hermano — very often they’re your ñaño (or ñaña for a woman). The word carries real warmth and stretches beyond blood: call a good friend ñaño and you’re saying they’re basically family. It lands softer and more affectionate than hermano, which is why the street vendor in the clip gets an easy ¿Cómo le va, ñaño?

Ñaño/ñaña comes from Kichwa (the Ecuadorian branch of Quechua), where ñaña meant a woman’s sister — Quechua has separate sibling words depending on the speaker’s gender. Spanish borrowed ñaña and coined the masculine ñaño by swapping in the Spanish -o ending. It’s especially Ecuadorian but heard elsewhere in the Andes.
