Does “qué pena” mean “sorry” in Colombia?

Elsewhere, qué pena leans “what a shame.” In Colombia it usually means “I’m so sorry” or “how embarrassing” — because there pena is embarrassment, not sorrow. So qué pena con usted is “I’m so embarrassed / I do apologize,” said when you bump into someone, show up late, or ask a favor. It’s the everyday Colombian “excuse me,” carrying a flush of social awkwardness rather than pity.

The giveaway is me da pena — in Colombia “it embarrasses me,” not “it saddens me.” You’ll also hear qué pena contigo, which nudges the blame onto the speaker (“my bad, so sorry”). In much of the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, the same words would read closer to “what a shame.”
