What is a “velorio” in Mexican culture and what is “¿Cómo dice el dicho?”

A velorio is a Mexican wake: an all-night vigil held next to the body of someone who has just died, with family, neighbors, food, coffee, and rosary prayers. The tradition is shared across Latin America, but the Mexican velorio has its own rhythm, often stretching across a full 24 hours and ending with a 9-day novena cycle (el novenario).
