How do you form commands with “vos” in Argentine Spanish?
In Argentina and Uruguay, “come!” is not ven but vení. The affirmative vos command is built by dropping the -r from the infinitive (venir → vení) and stressing the final syllable, which forces a written accent. No stem change either: dormir → dormí, not duerme. Once you spot the accent on the last vowel — vení, mirá, dale, contá — you’re hearing Rioplatense voseo, the single most recognizable feature of the region’s speech.
The clip lines up three of them: “Vení, date una vuelta… Dale, dale, mandate” — “Come on, take a spin… go ahead, go for it.” Dale is the all-purpose Rioplatense “OK / let’s do it.” Catch: the rule flips for negatives, which use the standard tú-subjunctive form — no vengas, not “no vení.” Affirmative voseo, negative tuteo: a small inconsistency every learner trips on once.
