What does “hornalla” mean in Argentina?
A hornalla is a stovetop burner, and the word is a Southern Cone marker: Argentina and Uruguay say hornalla where Spain and Chile say quemador, Peru and Venezuela say hornilla, and Central America says hornillo. Note it’s not the oven (horno) — it’s the individual flame on top. So una cocina de cuatro hornallas is a four-burner stove. Hear hornalla and you’re almost certainly listening to a Rioplatense speaker.
The clip pairs it with another Rioplatense gas word: garrafa, the bottled-gas (LPG) cylinder that homes connect to the stove — sold there in 10/12/15 kg sizes.
