What is “Jugendweihe,” and where does it come from?

Mid-quiz, this speaker mentions already having had their Jugendweihe — a secular coming-of-age ceremony for 14-year-olds. The tradition itself predates East Germany, tracing back to secular ceremonies in the 1850s, but the GDR (East Germany) turned it into the official socialist alternative to religious confirmation. The first official GDR Jugendweihe was held in 1955, and by the time the GDR ended in 1989, more than seven million young people had taken part.

Under the GDR, strong social and political pressure pushed nearly everyone to take part — skipping it could mean real disadvantages at school and beyond — and the ceremony included a pledge of allegiance to the socialist state. That political pledge disappeared after reunification, but the ceremony itself didn’t: Jugendweihe is still widely celebrated across eastern Germany today, now simply as a secular rite of passage.
