What does “sich verfangen” mean in German?
Sich verfangen means to get caught or ensnared in something — a fish in a net, a thread in a machine, or gum in carpet fibers. It is built from fangen (“to catch”) plus the prefix ver-, which adds a sense of going wrong or getting stuck. The result is more vivid than fangen alone: not just caught, but caught in a way that makes things worse the more you struggle.
In the clip, the speaker tries pulling the warm gum out by hand — “verfängt er sich nur in den Fasern” (“it just catches in the fibers”) — and the situation gets messier with every tug. That moment locks the word in memory better than any flashcard.
