What does the German prefix “aller-” mean, as in “allerletzte”?

A boy waves at his favorite team’s bus every day and gets ignored, so he tries ein allerletztes Mal — “one very last time” — before the bus finally stops. Aller- attaches to a superlative that’s already maxed out (letzt-, “last”) and pushes it further, the way “very” strengthens “best” in English. It signals genuine finality or intensity beyond what the plain superlative alone would carry.

The prefix is fully productive: allerbeste (very best), allerliebst (most beloved/dearest), allergrößte (biggest of all). German even allows stacking it for comic effect — alleraller- — though that’s playful exaggeration, not standard usage. Reach for “aller-” whenever “the best” or “the last” doesn’t feel absolute enough on its own.
