What does “Vorfeld” mean in German — and why “im Vorfeld”?

Standing on the airport’s Vorfeld — the apron where aircraft park, taxi, and get serviced — this mechanic does his nightly checks. Vorfeld literally means “front-field,” the restricted area right in front of the terminal buildings. The same word lives a completely different everyday life in the phrase im Vorfeld, meaning “beforehand” or “in the run-up to” something, with no runway in sight.

You’ll hear im Vorfeld constantly outside aviation: im Vorfeld der Wahlen (“in the run-up to the elections”) or das wurde im Vorfeld geklärt (“that was clarified beforehand”). It’s a slightly more formal stand-in for vorher (“before”). So a mechanic checking planes on the Vorfeld and a journalist writing about events im Vorfeld are, etymologically, standing on the same “field” — one physical, one just in time.
